Gauhati High Court Recruitment 2026

The Gauhati High Court has released three recruitment notifications on 6 July 2026 to fill up a total of 40 posts across the district courts of Assam, its Principal Seat, and the Law Research Institute. The vacancies cover Stenographer Grade-II, Private Secretary (Stenographer Grade-I), Chauffeur (Driver), and Multi-Tasking Staff. Applications are invited online from citizens of India who hold a valid Employment Exchange registration in the State of Assam.

The online application window opens on 10 July 2026 and remains open until 30 July 2026, while the last date for payment of the application fee is 5 August 2026. The largest share of the vacancies belongs to the Stenographer Grade-II recruitment for the district courts of Assam, which alone accounts for 35 of the 40 posts.

The three Private Secretary posts are broken up as one each for OBC/MOBC, ST(P) and ST(H), with the fourth reserved slot marked for PwBD candidates. The number of Stenographer Grade-II posts is indicative and may vary at the time of final selection.

Educational Qualification

Stenographer Grade-II: A graduate from a UGC-recognized University with a Diploma or Certificate in Stenography/Shorthand from an ITI, Polytechnic or other recognized institute. Candidates still pursuing the stenography course may also apply, but must submit the pass or completion certificate at the time of document verification.

Private Secretary (Stenographer Grade-I): A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University, preferably with a diploma in Stenography in English, along with a minimum speed of 120 wpm in shorthand and 50 wpm on a computer. Due weightage is given to a law graduate.

Chauffeur (Driver): A pass in Class X (HSLC) from a recognized Board and a valid LMV driving licence issued by the competent authority.

Multi Tasking Staff: A pass in Class VIII. Candidates who have passed HSSLC (Class 12) or above are not eligible, and applicants must declare in the form that they hold the Class VIII qualification but have not passed Class 12 or higher. Concealing a higher qualification leads to rejection.

Age Limit

The maximum age is calculated as on the last date of submission, 30 July 2026. The limits below apply to the Stenographer Grade-II, Chauffeur and Multi Tasking Staff posts.

Private Secretary: The maximum age is 41 years for OBC/MOBC, 43 years for ST(P)/ST(H) and 48 years for PwBD candidates. The minimum age for the Stenographer Grade-II post is 18 years. You can use our age calculator to confirm your age as on the last date.

Selection Process

Each notification has its own multi-stage process, and in every case the qualifying language segments do not count towards the merit list.

Stenographer Grade-II

Stenography Test (100 marks): A voice test, a shorthand dictation at 100 words per minute (700 words in 7 minutes) and transcription on a computer. A candidate must secure a minimum of 30 marks to move ahead.

Written Test (70 marks): An OMR-based objective paper of 1½ hours on English Language Proficiency (50) and Assamese (20). Both segments are qualifying, and a candidate must secure 40% in each. Candidates equal to 10 times the vacancies (1:10) who cleared the stenography test are called.

Viva-voce (10 marks): Candidates in a 1:3 ratio in order of merit are called. The final merit is based on the total of the stenography test and the viva-voce.

Private Secretary (Stenographer Grade-I)

Stenography Test (90 marks): A dictation at 120 words per minute (840 words in 7 minutes) followed by transcription on a computer. A candidate must secure at least 50%, that is 45 out of 90.

Written Examination (100 marks): A descriptive paper of 2 hours on English (80) and Assamese (20). It is qualifying in nature, with 40% needed in each segment. Candidates in a 1:10 ratio from the stenography test merit list are called.

Interview/Viva-Voce (30 marks): Candidates in a 1:3 ratio are called, and a candidate must secure at least 60%, that is 12 out of 30. The final merit is based on the stenography test and the viva-voce.

Chauffeur (Driver)

Screening Test (50 marks): A one-hour objective paper on Road Sign recognition (20), General Knowledge (20) and Assamese language proficiency (10). The Assamese segment is qualifying, and a candidate must score at least 5 out of 10.

Driving Test (40 marks): Candidates in a 1:5 ratio are called and tested on starting, driving, parking and after-driving (10 marks each). A candidate must secure at least 20 out of 40.

Interview/Viva-Voce (20 marks): Candidates in a 1:3 ratio are called, and 12 out of 20 is needed to qualify. The final merit is based on the driving test and the viva-voce.

Multi Tasking Staff

Written Examination (70 marks): An OMR-based objective paper of 1½ hours on General Knowledge/Current Affairs, General English, General Mathematics of Class VIII standard, and Assamese (20). The Assamese segment is qualifying, and a candidate must secure at least 8 out of 20.

Interview/Viva-Voce (20 marks): Candidates in a 1:5 ratio from the written test are called, and 12 out of 20 is needed to qualify. The final merit is based on the written test and the viva-voce.tion Number issued in Assam.
