About Ayang Trust, Majuli
Founded in 2017, Ayang Trust works to improve education and create better livelihood opportunities for underserved communities in Northeast India.
The organization is based in Majuli, Assam. Majuli is a river island and India’s only island district. According to the 2011 Census, around 170,000 people live there, including large Mising and Deori communities.
The island is surrounded by the Brahmaputra River and faces regular floods and serious land erosion. These challenges have slowed local development for many years. Its remote location, social barriers and yearly floods have also affected the quality of education. Around 75% of residents depend on subsistence farming, which limits financial security and access to health care and other basic services.
The Hummingbird School is central to Ayang Trust’s work. It follows the belief that education can help bring social change. Its teaching methods, curriculum and school environment aim to build kindness, critical thinking and social awareness among students.
Ayang Trust also supports women artisans and farmers through skills training, group work and access to markets. These efforts help families build different sources of income and reduce the effects of floods and other disasters.
